Sarah Abram named Junior Pro Bono Barrister of the Year

04/11/21

Sarah Abram has won the Junior Pro Bono Barrister of the Year Award at the 2021 Bar Pro Bono Awards.

The award was presented by Lord Goldsmith QC and the Solicitor General, Alex Chalk MP, at a ceremony on 3 November 2021.

Sarah was nominated for the award in recognition of her varied pro bono work.  Sarah has been a reviewer for Advocate (formerly the Bar Pro Bono Unit) since 2017, reviewing over 150 applications for pro bono assistance, and matching cases with barristers.  Sarah’s recent pro bono work has also included representing the environmental NGO ClientEarth unled at a General Court hearing in Luxembourg (news item here).  This led to a judgment finding that the Aarhus regulation applies to the European Investment Bank’s financing decisions, as a result of which the EIB will have to review whether those decisions are compliant with EU environmental law.

In addition, Sarah has been a driving force behind the mentoring scheme for prospective barristers from underrepresented groups, now involving ten sets of leading commercial chambers; information about the scheme appears here.
