Laura Newton has won the “Returner of the Year” category at the 2024 Women and Diversity in Law Awards. Inaugurated in 2022, the awards recognise those who are committed to DE&I and to using their positions of influence to help facilitate change. The Returner of the Year award is one of the Outstanding Women of the Year Awards, awarded to someone who has successfully returned from a period of parental leave and whose career is flourishing on their return. Laura returned from parental leave in June 2023 and has been instructed in back-to-back trials since her return, including the 13 week trial of the “Tuna Bonds” claims by and against the Republic of Mozambique, and another Commercial Court fraud trial at the start of 2024. She is currently leading a review into Brick Court’s parental leave policies with a view to ensuring a best practice model. After her return in June 2023 she was nominated as Commercial Litigation Junior of the Year by both Chambers & Partners and Legal 500.
