On 10th April 2018, the Brick Court Chambers and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer MasterCard team won the award for litigation defence (non-cartel) at the GCR Awards in Washington DC for their work on the Walter Merricks v Mastercard case.

On 21 July 2017, the Competition Appeal Tribunal dismissed an application to bring a collective action against Mastercard for breach of Article 101(1) TFEU on behalf of around 46 million consumers in the UK.  The value of the claim was said to be £14 billion and therefore if the collective action had proceeded it would have been the largest damages claim in English legal history. The judgment is currently under appeal.

Mark Hoskins QC, Tony Singla and Hugo Leith acted for Mastercard, instructed by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
