International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea gives advisory opinion on climate change and international law

Environment analysis: On 21 May 2024, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) gave an advisory opinion on climate change and international law. The Opinion has excited much interest and comment. This is in part because opinions from ITLOS are relatively rare and this is one of the first, if not the first, occasion on which the obligations of states in relation to climate change have been considered by an international (as opposed to regional or national) tribunal.
